Thermal printer

A thermal printer is a small, battery-powered printer that prints on heat-sensitive paper, so it needs no ink or toner. Enforcement officers carry one, usually paired to a phone or handheld by Bluetooth, to print a citation for the windshield. Some operators skip printing and leave a pre-printed notice with a QR code that links to the full citation online.
